A devastating fire tore through the Viva Wyndham Dominicus Beach Hotel in Bayahibe, a popular tourist destination in the Dominican Republic, killing one person and forcing the evacuation of nearly 1,700 guests and staff. Authorities said the blaze spread rapidly through parts of the beachfront resort, producing huge plumes of smoke visible across the coastline.
The victim was identified as 46-year-old Italian tourist Francesca Valentino. Emergency officials also reported that several other people required medical attention, with some taken to hospitals and others treated at the scene.
Fire Spread Quickly Through Resort
According to Dominican emergency authorities, the fire was intensified by strong winds and highly flammable palm-thatched roof structures found in parts of the resort. Firefighters and emergency responders battled the blaze for hours before bringing it under control.
Videos circulating online showed towering flames consuming sections of the hotel while thick black smoke rose over the Caribbean coastline. Guests were hurriedly evacuated and relocated to nearby hotels and accommodation facilities.
Investigation Underway
Authorities have launched an investigation to determine the exact cause of the fire. Officials said tourist activities in Bayahibe and surrounding areas remain safe and largely unaffected despite the incident. The nearby Viva Wyndham Dominicus Palace resort reportedly escaped damage and continues operations.
The affected hotel will remain closed until further notice as safety assessments and recovery efforts continue.
