Defense Architecture Expansion: COAS Appoints GOCs as Nigerian Army Activates Four New Divisions

In a historic overhaul of Nigeria’s military command structure, the Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, has approved the appointment of General Officers Commanding (GOCs) and Brigade Commanders for newly established Nigerian Army divisions. The major force expansion follows formal authorization from President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to create four additional divisions, expanding the army’s operational structure from 8 to 12 divisions to address evolving sub-national and border security challenges across the country.

According to an official release by the Acting Director of Army Public Relations, Colonel Appolonia Anele, on Wednesday, July 29, 2026, the newly created formations will commence immediate operations upon reaching Initial Operational Capability (IOC), with structured milestones set toward achieving Full Operational Capability (FOC).

The introduction of the new divisions has triggered a total redistribution of territorial responsibilities across existing and fresh formations to enhance localized command, rapid troop projection, and border monitoring.

• 1 Division (HQ Kaduna): Retains oversight for Kaduna, Kano, Katsina, and Jigawa states.
• 2 Division (HQ Ibadan): Covers Oyo, Osun, Ekiti, and Ondo states.
