Democratic Mandate: INEC Urges Unregistered Citizens to Mobilize as Continuous Voter Registration Closes Today

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has issued a final nationwide call to all eligible citizens, urging unregistered voters, first-time registrants, and individuals seeking transfer of voting points to complete their enrolment before the Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) window officially closes today, July 26, 2026. The deadline marks the conclusion of a two-week grace extension previously granted across key states to accommodate intense public demand and expand electoral inclusion.

Senior electoral officials across regional offices confirmed that registration centers—including state headquarters, 774 Local Government Area (LGA) offices, and newly activated mega centres—will remain operational until the scheduled daily cutoff to process all queueing applicants.

Expanding the Net: Self-Service Online Portals and Physical Extension

The final push comes on the heels of major technological and administrative adjustments rolled out by the commission. Following initial concerns regarding long lines and overcrowding at urban registration centers, INEC introduced a self-service online portal alongside the extension. The digital tool allowed prospective registrants to initiate pre-registration online, upload required biographical credentials, and schedule timed appointments for biometric capturing.

According to Resident Electoral Commissioners (RECs) across key states, including Prof. Ayobami Salami in Lagos State, the integration of digital pre-registration combined with local center extensions significantly eased pressure on ground facilities during the final fortnight.

Crucial Post-Registration Phases: Data De-Duplication and PVC PrintingThe formal conclusion of the CVR exercise today triggers the next critical phase in the election management cycle. Once physical and online entries cease, INEC’s technical divisions will run the national database through the Automated Biometric Identification System (ABIS) to detect and purge multiple registrations, fraudulent profiles, and ineligible entries.

”Your Permanent Voter Card is your constitutional voice,” emphasized electoral officials during early morning monitoring rounds. “Extending this registration window was a direct response to public demand. As the exercise shuts down today, we call on every queued Nigerian to ensure their capture is finalized.”

Looking Ahead: Preparing for PVC Distribution

Civil society organizations and election monitoring networks have applauded the commission’s decision to extend the CVR timeline and introduce digital entry portals. However, stakeholders emphasize that the ultimate measure of success will depend on the efficiency of the upcoming Permanent Voter Card (PVC) distribution exercise.

INEC has assured the public that dates and decentralized collection points for newly printed PVCs will be announced shortly after the completion of the ABIS verification exercise. Citizens are advised to retain their temporary registration slips safely to ensure a seamless card pick-up process once collection centers open nationwide.
