Leaders of the Group of Seven (G7) nations have gathered in Évian-les-Bains, France, for the 2026 summit as global attention turns to ongoing conflicts in Ukraine and the Middle East, as well as economic and technological challenges facing the world. The summit runs from June 15 to June 17 and brings together leaders from the United States, France, the United Kingdom, Germany, Italy, Japan, Canada, and the European Union.

French President Emmanuel Macron is hosting this year’s gathering, with discussions centered on international security, trade, artificial intelligence, energy markets, and geopolitical stability.

Ukraine Remains a Top Priority

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy joined summit discussions as he seeks continued international support in Ukraine’s war against Russia. European leaders are expected to discuss additional measures to support Kyiv and increase pressure on Moscow through sanctions and diplomatic initiatives.

The summit comes amid renewed Russian attacks and ongoing Ukrainian operations targeting military and energy infrastructure inside Russia.

Middle East Situation Also in Focus

Another major issue is the situation in the Middle East following recent U.S.-Iran negotiations and efforts to stabilize shipping through the Strait of Hormuz. Leaders are discussing regional security, energy supplies, and the implementation of agreements intended to reduce tensions.

U.S. President Donald Trump has expressed optimism about diplomatic progress while European leaders seek clarity on future arrangements involving Iran and regional security.

Economy, AI and Global Trade on the Agenda

Beyond security concerns, G7 leaders are examining economic challenges including trade imbalances, supply-chain resilience, artificial intelligence regulation, and support for developing nations facing heavy debt burdens.

AI governance and online safety have emerged as major discussion points during the summit.

The gathering also includes invited leaders from several emerging economies as France seeks broader international cooperation on global challenges.

Why This Matters

The summit could influence:

Ukraine’s military and diplomatic supportFuture sanctions on RussiaMiddle East stabilityGlobal energy markets

Artificial intelligence regulationInternational trade and economic policy

Decisions and statements emerging from the summit are expected to shape global diplomacy and economic cooperation in the months ahead
